CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Entrepreneurship students at Falls High are in the midst of marketing five new flavors of gourmet popcorn they've developed with the help of a local business owner.

Assistant Principal Kevin Vargyas said this is the second year in a row his 10th grade Engineering and Entrepreneurship (E Squared/E2) students have worked with Brent VanFossen, owner of Metropolis Popcorn on Front Street.

"We're working with Brent again and we're taking it to the next level," Vargyas said. "This year we are taste-testing and selling it now, too." Vargyas and his students traveled to the Cleveland City Club on Feb. 27 to market their popcorn and sell test samples.

Proceeds from the sale of popcorn this year will go toward paying students' way into an entrepreneurship camp at Cedar Point next year, he said.

The five new flavors that the students are test-marketing are: Caramel Marshmallow, French Toast, Jalapeno Bacon, Apple Pie and Caramel Banana Foster. Without saying which one, Vargyas said one flavor is way ahead of the other four and "jumping out of the container."

Last year's winner, Butterfinger, was so popular, Vargyas said, Metropolis continued to offer it for seven months after the project closed.

Vargyas said the project helps students hone their skills in communicating and data collecting.

"Maybe it will turn some people on to the idea of being an entrepreneur and maybe it will show some people how hard it is," Vargyas said. "These sample packs are available at the high school. Each pack will have a sample of all five new flavors and a card for ranking them."

Popcorn packs can be purchased in the Cuyahoga Falls High School Office, located at 2300 Fourth St. Public sales will close on April 28 which is also the deadline to return survey cards. The winning flavor will be announced in early May.
